As the much-anticipated political action thriller Jana Nayagan prepares for its grand worldwide theatrical release on July 23, 2026, director H. Vinoth has finally set the record straight. Putting months of fan speculation and trailer analysis to rest, the filmmaker has officially acknowledged that the Thalapathy Vijay-starrer draws significant inspiration from Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 2024 Telugu blockbuster, Bhagavanth Kesari.
Long before director H. Vinoth officially addressed the origins of Thalapathy Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, sharp-eyed pop-culture analysts and media platforms had already begun connecting the dots. Early trailer breakdowns—such as the detailed analysis published on Bollyo News—pointed out striking structural and thematic parallels between Jana Nayagan and Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 2024 Telugu blockbuster, Bhagavanth Kesari.
Speaking candidly in a recent interview with Galatta Plus, H. Vinoth revealed the exact mathematical breakdown of how much of the original film survived the transition into the Tamil cinematic landscape.
“Jana Nayagan is about 50 percent inspired by Bhagavanth Kesari,” Vinoth shared. Elaborating further, the director specified, “To be precise, the first half has 60 percent of the original film, while the second half retains only about 20 percent”.
The extensive reworking of the second half was driven by the need to steer away from a shot-by-shot remake, allowing Vinoth to infuse the narrative with fresh conflict, political weight, and the distinct thematic undertones expected from a Vijay film.
When asked why he chose to adapt Bhagavanth Kesari, Vinoth explained that the initial push came directly from Vijay himself. While Vinoth admitted initial hesitation—having previously helmed Nerkonda Paarvai (the Tamil remake of the Hindi film Pink with Ajith Kumar)—Vijay urged him to watch the Telugu hit.
The director noted that transitioning the story required a careful balancing act due to the contrasting screen personas of the two leading men.
“Balayya sir’s sensibilities and his power are entirely different. He exists in the ‘Balayya Universe’ where anything can happen because he is treated like a god with the ‘Jai Balayya’ mantra,” Vinoth observed. “Vijay sir can also do anything, but he has certain defined limits within his onscreen universe. I had to convert it into a story that fits the Vijay sir universe”.
Furthermore, Vinoth highlighted that Vijay’s personal dedication to social causes, particularly women’s empowerment, served as a primary anchor for the project. Drawing a parallel to his work with Ajith Kumar, the director noted that both stars share a deep-seated commitment to highlighting progressive, socially responsible themes in their mainstream commercial vehicles.

Originally slated for a Pongal release in January 2026 to coincide with a pre-electoral window, the film faced severe roadblocks, including an extended tussle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and a high-profile online leak.
