Despite their recent period drama Batwara 1947 encountering a lukewarm commercial reception at the box office, veteran filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi is wasting no time looking forward. The acclaimed director-actor duo, who have previously shaped milestones of Indian commercial cinema such as Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993), and Ghatak (1996), are officially set to reunite with Sunny Deol for another heavy-duty action entertainer.
In a candid interview with Variety, Santoshi revealed that conversations are actively underway for their next big-screen venture, choosing to focus on future creative collaborations rather than dwelling on past box-office numbers.
Teasing the core vibe of the upcoming project, Santoshi confirmed that the film will return to the intense, raw, and high-stakes action drama space that famously defined their earlier outings.
“We are planning our next action film. It will be on the lines of Ghatak. Let’s hope it works out soon,” Santoshi shared.
While formal plot details are currently tightly guarded, industry insiders indicate that the makers are actively developing the venture as a spiritual successor or direct sequel—potentially titled Ghatak 2—to their 1996 vigilante action cult classic. The initial script narration has already been completed, and Santoshi is putting the finishing touches on the final draft. Subject to Sunny Deol’s packed calendar, the team aims to officially announce the project within the next three months and take it to floors by mid-2027.
Reflecting on the commercial trajectory of Batwara 1947, which starred Sunny Deol alongside an ensemble cast, Santoshi admitted that both the team and producer Aamir Khan were surprised by the unexpected box-office outcome.
Addressing speculation regarding whether Deol’s massive, action-oriented mainstream image played a part, Santoshi defended the actor’s creative risks:
“If it has gone against him, then I feel very sad. If audiences truly love an actor, they should encourage him to conquer new peaks. Sunny is an actor; he should be able to play any character. What matters is whether he has done justice to the role.”
The announcement of this fresh action collaboration adds to an already stellar roster of projects lined up for Sunny Deol:
- Ramayana: He is set to appear as Lord Hanuman in Nitesh Tiwari’s magnum opus Ramayana, scheduled for a grand theatrical release during Diwali 2026.
- Antony: Deol recently wrapped up shooting for Excel Entertainment’s gritty action-thriller Antony, co-starring Jyotika and Vijay Varma.
