The gears are turning once again for the much-awaited fantasy sequel Brahmastra 2. Following changes in studio alignments and negotiations, director Ayan Mukerji is reportedly in advanced discussions with top-tier producer and visual effects mogul Namit Malhotra of Prime Focus to come on board as the primary studio partner for the franchise’s second chapter.
The development follows a period of transition for the Astraverse, as the franchise moves forward independently under Mukerji’s banner, Starlight Pictures Private Limited, which holds the intellectual property rights to the universe.
While the original 2022 blockbuster Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva was heavily backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Star Studios, Ayan Mukerji has shifted the franchise’s framework. Starlight Pictures is set to spearhead the production of Brahmastra 2, prompting the search for a robust financial and technical studio collaborator to scale the project globally.
Earlier, the makers engaged in extensive discussions with Jio Studios to board the sequel. However, those negotiations ultimately did not materialize, with Jio stepping back from associating with the project. Similarly, while Star Studios was a principal partner on the first instalment, its transition into the broader JioStar ecosystem left room for a new partnership structure. As things stand, neither Jio Studios nor Star Studios is tied to the sequel.
Enter Namit Malhotra, whose connection to high-scale cinematic universes makes him an ideal collaborator for a massive VFX-driven franchise. Malhotra’s Prime Focus was previously one of the co-producers on the first Brahmastra.
Given that the company stands at the global forefront of visual effects—having further scaled its technical prowess through monumental ventures like the upcoming Ramayana trilogy—bringing Malhotra on board offers a seamless synergy.
