Bollywood filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has officially announced one of his most ambitious cinematic ventures to date, celebrating a monumental chapter in Indian geopolitical history. Backed by Dharma Productions and Leo Media Collective, the yet-untitled high-stakes action thriller will trace the riveting life and covert operations of Rameshwar Nath (RN) Kao, the legendary founding father and first chief of India’s external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW).
Adapted from reputed journalist and author Nitin A. Gokhale’s acclaimed biographical book Gentleman Spymaster, the film is locked for a theatrical release on August 11, 2028. The project serves as a grand cinematic cornerstone commemorating the 60-year legacy of R&AW.

Today marks 58 years of R&AW and we’re thrilled to announce our film on the story of RN Kao, the man who operated in the shadows & brought to light an institution we know today as R&AW – and its first mission. Based on the book Gentleman Spymaster by Nitin Gokhale, his story comes alive on big screens on 11 August, 2028.”
Plot Scope: From 1955 to the 1971 War
The upcoming feature will chronicle a transformative timeline in Indian national security, zooming in on Kao’s journey from 1955 to 1971.
- Building the Invisible: The narrative will explore the critical geopolitical pressure points and intelligence gaps exposed during the 1962 Sino-Indian War and the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, which necessitated the birth of an independent, dedicated external intelligence apparatus.
- The 1971 Triumph: The film’s narrative climax will focus heavily on R&AW’s maiden major trial by fire—orchestrating strategic intelligence and logistical support during the historic 1971 war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
Who Was Rameshwar Nath Kao? The Life of India’s Greatest Spymaster
Born on May 10, 1918, in Varanasi into a Kashmiri Pandit family, Rameshwar Nath Kao—affectionately known as “Ramji” among close circles—grew up to become one of the most influential intelligence architects of the 20th century.
- Early Career & The IB Years: After completing his education at Lucknow University and Allahabad University, Kao cleared the civil services examination and joined the Indian Imperial Police in 1940. Around the dawn of independence, he transitioned to the Intelligence Bureau (IB), where he quickly rose through the ranks and oversaw the personal security detail of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
- Founding R&AW (1968): Recognizing the need to separate domestic and foreign intelligence operations, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi handpicked Kao in 1968 to conceptualize, structure, and head India’s first dedicated external agency. Under his visionary leadership, R&AW swiftly earned international acclaim from premier global agencies like the CIA, MI6, and Mossad for its surgical precision and professionalism.
- The “Gentleman Spymaster” Persona: Earning his moniker due to his immaculate elegance, understated demeanour, and intellectual depth, Kao was famously characterized by foreign counterparts—such as French intelligence chief Count Alexandre de Marenches—as one of the defining global spymasters of the 1970s. Beyond the 1971 war, he also played a monumental role in steering strategic integrations, including the peaceful accession of Sikkim into the Indian Union in 1975.
- Later Years and Legacy: Kao retired from active public service in 1977, later returning as a senior security adviser to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in the 1980s, where he aided in the creation of the National Security Guard (NSG). True to his lifelong commitment to absolute discretion, he lived a fiercely private life until his passing in 2002.
