
The 70th Filmfare Awards 2025 delivered a spectacular night of recognition for Hindi cinema, with Kiran Rao’s critically acclaimed social comedy, “Laapataa Ladies,” dominating the ceremony. The film swept a phenomenal 13 trophies, including the coveted Best Film and Best Director for Rao, equating the record set by Gully Boy in 2020. Meanwhile, Kartik Aaryan and Alia Bhatt took home the Best Actor honours, celebrating a phenomenal year for commercial hits and compelling performances.
Big Winners Shine in Leading Categories
The fiercely contested Best Actor categories saw some of the biggest names in the industry claim the iconic Black Lady. In a unique moment, the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male) award resulted in a tie, with both Kartik Aaryan and Abhishek Bachchan securing the trophy for their respective standout performances. Aaryan received the award for his inspiring portrayal in the biopic “Chandu Champion,” while Bachchan earned the honour for his powerful role in the drama “I Want To Talk.”
Alia Bhatt continued her winning streak, securing the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) award for her intense performance in the action-drama “Jigra.” Her win cements her position as one of Bollywood’s most consistent and versatile actors.
The night also celebrated critical excellence, with Rajkummar Rao winning the Critics’ Award for Best Actor (Male) for his brilliant titular performance in “Srikanth.” Adding to the Laapataa Ladies haul, the film’s lead, Pratibha Rannta, secured the Critics’ Award for Best Actor (Female) for her compelling work.
Laapataa Ladies Sets New Benchmark
Kiran Rao’s directorial triumph became the biggest story of the night. Laapataa Ladies secured wins across key categories, confirming its status as a masterpiece of storytelling. Beyond Best Film and Best Director, the film earned accolades for its stellar supporting cast. Ravi Kishan won Best Supporting Actor (Male) for his memorable turn as the Inspector, and Chhaya Kadam took home the Best Supporting Actor (Female) award.
The film’s strength in writing and music also received significant recognition. Sneha Desai won both Best Screenplay and Best Dialogue. Ram Sampath earned the Best Music Album and Best Background Score awards, while Prashant Pandey won Best Lyrics for the song ‘Sajni,’ which also saw Arijit Singh win Best Playback Singer (Male). Furthermore, Nitanshi Goel won Best Debut Actor (Female), marking a powerful new entry to the industry.
Critics Hail I Want To Talk
The Critics’ Award for Best Film went to Shoojit Sircar’s hard-hitting drama, “I Want To Talk,” acknowledging its significant artistic merit and social relevance. The film also clinched the Best Adapted Screenplay award for Ritesh Shah and Tushar Sheetal Jain.
