Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has officially put an end to the whirlwind of speculation surrounding his recent activity on Instagram. The director, known for his close-knit circle of celebrity friends, sparked a massive social media frenzy earlier this week when eagle-eyed netizens noticed that he had unfollowed several prominent Bollywood figures, including Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Manish Malhotra.
The mass unfollowing spree led to immediate rumours of potential fallouts and personal rifts within the industry. However, the filmmaker has now stepped forward to clarify his stance, labelling the entire episode as a simple “digital detox.”
Taking to his Instagram Stories on Thursday night, Karan Johar addressed the buzz with his signature blend of wit and sarcasm. Dismissing the theories that suggested a breakdown in his professional or personal relationships, the director emphasized that the move was purely a personal decision to manage his time.
“It’s a DIGITAL DETOX!!!! Am unfollowing everyone to reduce my time and energy spent on the gram!!!” Karan wrote in a sharp, pointed note.
The filmmaker did not hold back when reacting to the intensity of the coverage the story received. He urged his followers and the media to focus on more meaningful topics, stating, “This can’t be national news for god’s sake… please clickbait something else! This is irrelevant!”

Prior to his clarification, social media platforms were saturated with screenshots showing that Karan had reduced his following list to approximately 78 accounts, despite having over 17.5 million followers himself. While most of his inner circle—including Dharma Productions’ protégés like Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, and Ananya Panday—were removed from his list, observant fans noticed that actor Priyanka Chopra remained as one of the few high-profile names he continued to follow.
This is not the first time the filmmaker has engaged in a social media cleanup. In June 2020, Karan famously trimmed his following list on Twitter (now X) to just a handful of accounts, including those of Apoorva Mehta and close industry associates.
Industry analysts suggest that the filmmaker’s desire to “reduce his time and energy” on social media comes at a busy time for his production house, Dharma Productions. With several projects in various stages of production, including the highly anticipated Naagzilla starring Kartik Aaryan, Johar appears to be prioritizing professional output over the demands of perpetual social media engagement.
The filmmaker is also preparing to return as the host for the ninth season of his iconic celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan, which is expected to premiere later this year.
While the media cycle was quick to label the move as “drama,” Karan’s direct intervention via his own platform has successfully diverted the narrative toward his intended message: that social media is an optional space, and his personal choices should not be magnified into professional conflicts.
