The legal battle against unauthorized digital exploitation and deepfake media has gained momentum in the Indian judiciary. Actor and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut has officially moved the Delhi High Court, filing a comprehensive lawsuit seeking legal protection for her personality and publicity rights against the unauthorized commercial exploitation and misuse of her name, image, likeness, voice, and distinctive persona.
Accordingly to a report by ANI, The matter was taken up for hearing by Justice Vikas Mahajan, who issued formal summons to the responding defendants and reviewed petitions concerning aggressive online infringement, AI-generated fabrications, and defamatory content.
Court Proceedings and Initial Observations
During the court proceedings, Kangana Ranaut’s legal counsel presented multiple web links, digital clips, and social media handles that allegedly circulated fake news, morphs, and deepfake materials.
- The AI and Deepfake Threat: The plea explicitly highlighted concerns regarding generative artificial intelligence being misused to create unauthorized, explicit, or obscene content, as well as falsely attributed statements targeting the actor-politician.
- Distinguishing Satire from Infringement: While reviewing the case materials, Justice Vikas Mahajan examined specific web links, memes, and animated pieces placed on record. The bench observed that certain items carried a satirical tone, with Ranaut’s counsel clarifying that they were not aggressively pressing for immediate interim injunctions against light-hearted or protected satirical memes at this primary stage.
- Summons and Next Date: Finding merit in initiating formal judicial examination, Justice Vikas Mahajan issued notices on Ranaut’s application seeking interim protection. The court has formally listed the matter for further hearings on February 3, 2027, while evaluating parameters to restrain third parties from capitalizing on her celebrity identity without explicit consent.
The Rising Trend: Celebrities Seeking Personality Rights Protection
Kangana Ranaut joins a rapidly expanding roster of Indian film stars, athletes, public figures, and content creators who have turned to the legal system to protect their individual identity, brand value, and dignity from predatory digital practices.
- Precedent-Setting Rulings: Over recent years, the Delhi and Bombay High Courts have stepped in to safeguard several prominent personalities. Notable beneficiaries of “John Doe” (Ashok Kumar) and protective orders include megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor (protecting his voice, likeness, and catchphrases), Rajinikanth, Jackie Shroff, Arijit Singh, and Salman Khan.
- Broad Spectrum of Litigants: Beyond cinema, the judicial umbrella covering personality and publicity rights has expanded to include leading athletes and politicians—such as Yuvraj Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor—alongside digital creators, spiritual leaders, and journalists combating synthetic impersonation online.
As artificial intelligence tools become more accessible, legal experts note that such proactive lawsuits are setting crucial judicial guardrails, balancing the boundaries of public critique and free expression against the unlawful commercial exploitation of human dignity.
