Randeep Hooda and Shraddha Kapoor in Eetha

The highly anticipated biopic on legendary Marathi folk artist Vithabai Narayangaonkar has locked in its star-studded lead cast. Critically acclaimed actor Randeep Hooda has officially joined Shraddha Kapoor in the biographical drama, now tentatively titled ‘Eetha’.

The film, which aims to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of the ‘Tamasha Samradini’ (Empress of Tamasha), is directed by Laxman Utekar, fresh off the success of his historical action film, Chhaava. The makers are set to commence the film’s principal photography by the end of November 2025 in Mumbai, signalling a fast-tracked production schedule for one of next year’s most culturally rich cinematic offerings.

Randeep Hooda’s addition to the cast is a significant coup, pairing the actor known for his intense, character-driven performances (Highway, Sarbjit) with the commercially successful and emotionally sincere Shraddha Kapoor.

Sources close to the production confirmed that Randeep Hooda will play the romantic lead opposite Shraddha Kapoor’s titular character. His role is described as a pivotal character who shares a significant portion of Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s incredible life journey.

“The shoot commences end of this month in Mumbai. Randeep plays the romantic lead opposite Shraddha…the makers are extremely confident about the casting, as both Randeep and Shraddha bring depth and versatility that fit perfectly with Utekar’s vision,” a source revealed.

This collaboration marks the first time Hooda and Kapoor will share screen space, promising a fresh and unique dynamic to anchor the emotional core of the biopic.

Shraddha Kapoor is all set to embody Vithabai Narayangaonkar, a figure revered for her immense contribution to the Marathi folk art forms of Lavani and Tamasha. Vithabai, who earned two President’s Awards for preserving and popularizing Indian folk culture, lived a life defined by resilience, artistry, and dedication.

The film’s title, ‘Eetha,’ is reportedly derived from the regional, affectionate pronunciation of ‘Vitha’ in certain parts of rural Maharashtra.

To authentically portray the ‘Tamasha Samradini,’ Shraddha Kapoor has reportedly begun rigorous training in traditional Marathi folk dances, including Lavani and Gavlan. This intensive preparation is necessary to convincingly embody Vithabai’s commanding stage presence and high-energy performances that captivated generations of audiences. The film is expected to explore Vithabai’s tumultuous life, including her struggles as a woman in a male-dominated performing art form and her eventual triumph.

Director Laxman Utekar, who also helmed films like Mimi and Luka Chuppi, is known for his ability to blend realism with emotional storytelling. Following the success of his latest historical film, Utekar is poised to deliver a powerful and culturally rich cinematic experience with Eetha.

The biographical drama aims to be an authentic tribute to Maharashtra’s vibrant folk heritage, showcasing the rich cultural history of Tamasha—a traditional theatrical art form that combines storytelling with singing, dancing, and satire. By featuring two versatile actors, Utekar ensures the film will possess the depth and authenticity required to honour the legacy of such a prominent cultural icon. The production is keenly focused on capturing the essence of the performing art and the historical period in which Vithabai reigned supreme.

Shraddha Kapoor’s collaboration with the director and her commitment to such a demanding, character-driven role signals a significant, welcome shift in her filmography, promising one of the most anticipated performances of her career.
