Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 functions as a spiritual sequel to the 2012 hit Cocktail, which famously starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty. While the original film captured the complexities of modern urban friendship and messy heartbreaks, this standalone successor takes a fresh look at contemporary relationships, commitment phobia, and love through a modern lens.
The narrative revolves around Kunal (played by Shahid Kapoor), a talented chef, and Diya (played by Rashmika Mandanna), an architect. Having been childhood friends and in a committed live-in relationship for nearly a decade, the couple decides to escape mounting societal and family pressure to tie the knot by taking a romantic holiday together in scenic Italy.
While their relationship initially appears rock-solid, things take a chaotic turn when they run into Diya’s carefree, vibrant best friend Alisha, alias Ally (played by Kriti Sanon).
As lingering doubts and insecurities creep into Diya’s mind, she devises a plan: she asks Alisha to get close to Kunal to test his loyalty. What starts out as a playful, harmless experiment quickly spirals out of control. Alisha’s pretend flirtation develops into genuine emotional stakes, plunging the trio into a messy, unpredictable love triangle that forces everyone to re-evaluate what they truly want out of love and commitment.
