Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is embarking on his most ambitious cinematic journey yet. The actor has officially confirmed he will star in Samuk, a groundbreaking, large-scale alien action-thriller. This film is poised to redefine the survival sci-fi genre in India by blending military realism with terrifying extraterrestrial horror.
Produced by the veteran filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah—marking a high-profile reunion for the duo after 12 years—alongside Aashin A Shah, Samuk is being developed as a massive pan-Indian theatrical event. With a projected 2027 release window, the production team is already setting global standards for the film’s technical craftsmanship.
For Akshay Kumar, who is widely regarded as the “Action Hero of India,” Samuk offers a fresh challenge. “Yes, I’ve signed this film. I found the script and subject of Samuk fascinating,” Kumar said in a recent statement. “Alien thriller is a totally new genre for me and also for our films. I am very excited about it.”
Directed by Kanishk Varma—known for his work on Sanak and Inside Edge—the film shifts away from traditional Bollywood storytelling. Varma revealed that the project was born from his deep fascination with elite security forces (SPG) and classic survival thrillers like Alien and Predator.
To ensure Samuk competes on a global scale, the makers have assembled an elite international technical team with deep experience in Hollywood’s biggest franchises:
- Practical Creature Design: Acclaimed creature FX designer Alec Gillis has joined the team to build the film’s alien nemesis. With an iconic career spanning Alien, Predator, Starship Troopers, and Alien: Romulus, Gillis is prioritizing “tactical horror.” He emphasizes that the alien will be a physical, handcrafted creature brought to life on set rather than relying solely on CGI or AI.
- High-Octane Action: The film’s action choreography is being overseen by British stunt coordinator Luke Tumber. Tumber brings a wealth of experience from blockbuster franchises, including Mission: Impossible, Star Wars, No Time To Die, and the Venom series.
Gillis praised Akshay Kumar’s physical dedication to the role, noting, “He has the physicality of Jason Statham and the likeability of Tom Cruise. My goal is to create an alien nemesis whose energy and screen charisma equal Mr. Kumar’s.”
Samuk is intentionally moving away from the trend of heavily CGI-dependent monster movies. By focusing on “old-school tactile horror,” the filmmakers aim to create a timeless, gritty atmosphere that grounds the high-concept sci-fi premise in reality.
Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah stated, “We always try to challenge ourselves with different genres, and Samuk is something Indian cinema hasn’t attempted before. Our aim is to create a world-class alien thriller for audiences.”
As the project prepares to go on floors, the combination of a veteran action superstar, a sharp director, and Hollywood’s leading creature-design experts positions Samuk as a potential milestone in Indian cinema. By fusing the tension of a military survival thriller with the terrifying mystery of extraterrestrial life, the team is crafting a cinematic experience that audiences have never seen before.
