In a significant legal development regarding personality rights and digital accountability, the Delhi High Court has cracked down on unauthorized media projects. The court directed the immediate removal of the promotional teaser for Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, a controversial film allegedly inspired by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s 1998 blackbuck poaching case.
Presiding over the matter, Justice Jyoti Singh observed that the continuous availability of the content on online platforms severely damages the actor’s reputation. The bench firmly stated that if the film’s producer fails to take down the controversial teaser voluntarily, major intermediaries such as X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube will be officially mandated to scrub all links within 24 hours.
The high-profile legal battle stems from a plea filed by Salman Khan seeking robust protection of his personality and publicity rights. Having previously secured favourable orders safeguarding his likeness and persona, the actor moved an urgent application seeking an absolute ban on Kala Hiran.
According to Khan’s legal team, the film explicitly portrays him with malicious intent, drawing direct parallels to the ongoing, sub judice legal proceedings currently pending before higher courts like the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court. The petition highlighted that the project’s promotional material features a character closely mirroring Khan—complete with signature elements like his distinct bracelet—and insinuates underworld links.
Furthermore, the actor argued that such sensationalized dramatizations heavily prejudice his right to a fair trial. Highlighting his legal standing, counsel pointed out that Khan has already been legally cleared or acquitted in three of the related criminal cases, with his sentence suspended in the remaining matter.
During the intense hearing, Justice Jyoti Singh did not hold back in criticizing the conduct of the film’s producer, Amit Jani. The court noted that the teaser inflicts ongoing damage to an individual’s standing every single moment it remains accessible on the internet.
“A person’s reputation takes years and years to build, but can be lost in a matter of seconds,” Justice Singh remarked during the proceedings, emphasizing that such blatant disrespect of judicial processes cannot be tolerated even for an ordinary citizen, let alone a public figure.
Counsel representing the producer argued that the teaser never explicitly names Salman Khan and relies purely on public domain events without utilizing deepfake technology or artificial intelligence. However, after briefly reviewing the teaser in court, the bench countered that depicting matters currently under active judicial consideration borders on contempt. The court also addressed digital intermediaries like Meta and Google, reminding platform owners of their corporate and legal responsibilities in curbing defamatory content.
