The highly anticipated sequel to the 2006 cult classic comedy, Bhagam Bhag, has hit a major legal roadblock. Cameras were set to roll on March 2, 2026, but the production of Bhagam Bhag 2 has come to a grinding halt. Powerhouse producer Ekta Kapoor has filed a legal case against director Raaj Shaandilyaa, alleging a significant breach of contract.
The dispute has sent shockwaves through the industry, as it not only stalls one of the year’s biggest comedy projects but also leaves the schedules of some of Bollywood’s most prominent stars in limbo.
The legal battle stems from a prior agreement between Raaj Shaandilyaa and Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms. According to the petition, Raaj had signed a three-film deal with Kapoor. After successfully delivering two projects, the director allegedly moved forward to helm outside productions without fulfilling his third-film obligation.
Ektaa Kapoor’s legal team asserts that Raaj failed to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) before signing on to direct Bhagam Bhag 2. Furthermore, the petition claims that the director did not refund the advance payment he received for the third project under the Balaji banner. This “professional detour” irked the producer, leading to the current litigation in a bid to enforce the exclusivity of the original contract.
As the legal notice reached the desks of the film’s producers—Ashwin Varde and Cape of Good Films—the gravity of the situation became clear. The notice explicitly sought to stall the shoot until the contractual obligations with Balaji Telefilms were addressed.
Recognizing the potential for a prolonged and messy court battle, the producers made the difficult decision to cancel the current schedule. Industry insiders suggest that proceeding with the shoot while a legal notice is active could lead to an injunction, potentially wasting crores of rupees in production costs. Consequently, the team decided to hit the pause button until Raaj Shaandilyaa and Ektaa Kapoor resolve their differences.
The timing of the legal strike couldn’t have been worse. The production team had already secured the dates of a powerhouse trio: Akshay Kumar, Manoj Bajpayee, and Paresh Rawal.
The three actors were all set to begin the first schedule in Lucknow and other parts of India starting March 2. However, with the shoot cancelled indefinitely, the actors have officially released their dates. In an industry where coordinating the schedules of three top-tier stars is a logistical nightmare, this release is a massive setback for the project’s timeline.
Bhagam Bhag 2 carries the weight of immense nostalgia. The original 2006 film, directed by Priyadarshan, remains a staple in Indian pop culture and meme history. The sequel was intended to reunite Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal, with the addition of the versatile Manoj Bajpayee, promising a masterclass in comic timing.
The current halt is a blow to fans who have waited nearly two decades for the “Run-for-your-life” comedy to return. Raaj Shaandilyaa, known for his success with the Dream Girl franchise, was seen as the perfect fit to modernize the brand. However, this legal tussle puts a question mark over whether he will remain at the helm or if the producers will have to seek a settlement with Balaji Telefilms to move forward.
Legal experts suggest two possible outcomes. Either Raaj Shaandilyaa settles the matter by returning the advance and negotiating an exit from the Balaji deal, or Balaji Telefilms may demand a co-production credit or a share in the profits of his outside ventures.
Until a middle ground is found, the sets in Lucknow remain empty. The producers have expressed their intent to resume as soon as the legal “red tape” is cleared, but for now, the “Bhagam Bhag” (running around) is happening in the courtroom rather than on the film set.
