Alpha OTT Release: Alia Bhatt and Sharvari’s Spy Thriller to Premiere on Netflix on August 28, 2026

Following a mixed commercial run in theatres, Yash Raj Films‘ ambitious spy-action entertainer Alpha is officially making its transition to digital streaming. Netflix has announced that the high-octane actioner will premiere on the platform on August 28, 2026, giving audiences a chance to experience the franchise from home roughly eight weeks after its initial big-screen debut on July 3, 2026.

Directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha marks a historic milestone as the first female-led chapter within the sprawling, interconnected YRF Spy Universe, expanding upon the foundations laid by blockbusters like Ek Tha Tiger, Pathaan, and War.

Alpha introduces a gritty, high-stakes narrative centered around espionage, genetic experimentation, and fractured family bonds.

  • The Core Plot: The story follows Sita (played by Alia Bhatt), a highly trained R&AW operative being groomed to become an elite Alpha soldier. Alongside her is her estranged fraternal twin, Durga Kaul (played by Sharvari).
  • The Antagonist and Conflict: The plot takes a dark psychological turn with the introduction of Colonel Fateh Singh Lakhawat (played by Bobby Deol), a rogue mastermind executing dangerous human trials centered on a powerful combat-enhancing serum known as Alpha. When Sita is captured and subjected to these experiments, she is brainwashed and transformed into a lethal super-soldier.
  • The Redemption Arc: Driven by survival, raw vengeance, and deep-seated family truths, the narrative charts Durga’s relentless mission to rescue her sister and dismantle the syndicate, setting off explosive combat sequences across international backdrops.

The film features a power-packed ensemble, including Anil Kapoor in a pivotal senior intelligence role, alongside a heavily discussed, high-impact cameo appearance by Hrithik Roshan linking back to the broader Spy Universe continuity.

While anticipation surrounding Alpha was sky-high prior to release given its massive scale and the backing of studio titan Aditya Chopra and co-producer Akshaye Widhani, the film received mixed-to-polarizing reviews from critics and audiences alike.

While praise was directed at the action choreography and the committed lead performances by Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, critiques targeted elements of the screenplay and pacing. Consequently, the film witnessed a lukewarm commercial response at the box office, wrapping up its theatrical chapter with the following figures according to trade trackers:

  • India Net Collection: ₹58.86 crore
  • India Gross Collection: ₹70.05 crore
  • Overseas Gross: ₹29.05 crore
  • Total Worldwide Gross: ₹99.10 crore

Despite falling short of the monumental benchmarks set by previous YRF Spy Universe titles, Alpha remains a significant production experiment as a female-driven action spectacle.

With its theatrical run concluding, the digital release on Netflix provides a fresh platform for viewers to catch the action unfold. Whether the OTT release helps the film find a renewed appreciation among home audiences remains to be seen when it begins streaming on August 28.
