The 1980s and 90s silver screen icon Meenakshi Seshadri is officially stepping back into the arcades of Indian cinema. Barely two months after permanently relocating to Mumbai to actively resume her acting career, the versatile star has bagged a high-profile project, marking her official OTT debut in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video courtroom drama series Nanavati vs Nanavati.
Directed by Vipul Shah and produced under the banner of Sunshine Pictures, the eight-episode series is currently being shot in Mumbai. Beyond her return, the biggest talking point of the project is its nostalgic casting coup: Meenakshi is reuniting with co-star Jackie Shroff nearly four decades after their 1983 blockbuster smash Hero. The series will feature them in age-appropriate, mature characters alongside an ensemble cast that includes Bhagyashree, Ram Kapoor, and Anupriya Goenka.
Born Shashikala Seshadri, the actress displayed an exceptional proficiency in classical dance from a very young age. Trained rigorously in Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, and Odissi, she won the prestigious Eve’s Weekly Miss India contest in 1981 at the tender age of 17. Her striking classical poise, expressive eyes, and natural grace immediately caught the attention of filmmakers, setting the stage for a remarkable transition into acting.
Meenakshi Seshadri’s cinematic journey changed overnight when visionary filmmaker Subhash Ghai cast her as the leading lady in his 1983 romantic action film Hero opposite newcomer Jackie Shroff. The film shattered box office records, turning both leads into overnight superstars.
Throughout the mid-1980s and 1990s, Seshadri successfully carved out a unique space as both a commercial superstar and a critically acclaimed performer—a rare feat for heroines of that era. Settled in Texas, she traded movie sets for a quiet family life, raising her children and dedicating herself deeply to her artistic roots by establishing a prominent classical dance school where she taught Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Kathak to hundreds of students, occasionally performing on global stages.
