Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ First Look From SS Rajamouli’s ‘Varanasi’ Unveiled on Her Birthday

Priyanka Chopra Jonas celebrated her 44th birthday on July 18, 2026, with a spectacular gift for her fans. The production team behind the highly anticipated SS Rajamouli epic, Varanasi, unveiled two stunning new stills of the actress, officially introducing audiences to her character, Mandakini.

The birthday reveal has ignited social media, with fans and industry peers alike celebrating the fierce transformation. Director SS Rajamouli shared the stills on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram with a poignant caption: “Grace when she smiles. Fire when she doesn’t. Mandakini… Priyanka Chopra in #Varanasi.”

Leading man Mahesh Babu, who headlines the film, also joined the celebrations by sharing Priyanka’s newly released images on his social media platforms.

He wrote: “Happy Birthday to the one and only ‘Mandakini.’ Have the most amazing year ahead PC… Sending you lots of love and wishing you happiness always!!! #VARANASI @priyankachopra.”

The warm message further highlighted the camaraderie among the cast as anticipation continues to build around their first collaboration.

The two newly released images highlight the duality of Mandakini. In the first, Priyanka appears carefree, leaping through a sprawling, exotic landscape teeming with wildlife, exuding an adventurous spirit. The second image presents a sharper, more formidable side of the character; dressed in a striking black corset-style sheer ensemble with dramatic charcoal makeup, she sports a deadly, intense smirk that hints at the high-stakes action waiting for audiences.

Varanasi marks Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ return to Indian cinema after an absence of nearly seven years.

During this period, the actress successfully expanded her international career through acclaimed Hollywood films and global streaming projects while continuing to establish herself as one of India’s most recognized global stars.

Varanasi is rapidly shaping up to be one of the most ambitious productions in Indian cinematic history. Directed by the visionary SS Rajamouli and written by V. Vijayendra Prasad, the film blends Indian mythology, folklore, and science fiction into a grand, globe-spanning adventure.

Spanning eras from 512 CE to the modern day, the narrative follows Mahesh Babu’s character, Rudhra, on a journey that takes him from the ancient ghats of Varanasi to the frozen Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica and the savannas of Kenya. With an estimated budget of ₹1,400 crore, the film is set to be the most expensive Indian production to date.

Despite widespread speculation that Varanasi could evolve into a multi-film saga, director S.S. Rajamouli has officially clarified the project’s structure.

The filmmaker confirmed that Varanasi will remain a standalone feature film and will not be divided into multiple parts or expanded into a cinematic franchise.

Although the film incorporates spectacular elements such as mythology, science fiction, time travel, and natural disasters, Rajamouli emphasized that its emotional foundation lies in a deeply personal father-son relationship.

For Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Varanasi marks a landmark return to Indian cinema. Speaking on a recent podcast, the actress revealed she has been immersed in the project for over 14 months, praising Rajamouli’s meticulous, time-intensive filmmaking style. While maintaining secrecy around the plot, she teased the intense physicality of her role, jokingly noting, “I do so many amazing slow-motion jumps.”

The film, which also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as the antagonist, Kumbha, is confirmed to be a standalone feature rather than a multi-part franchise. With music by Oscar-winner M. M. Keeravani and a scheduled worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, Varanasi promises to be a transformative cinematic event.
