The wait for one of the most anticipated sequels in Indian cinema history is finally over. Sohum Shah, the visionary actor-producer who redefined Indian folk-horror with the 2018 cult classic Tumbbad, has officially taken the franchise forward. Tumbbad 2 went on floors this week following a traditional Mahurat puja in Mumbai, signalling the start of a production that promises to be even more ambitious and atmospheric than its predecessor.
The news has ignited a firestorm of excitement across social media, especially after the original film’s record-breaking theatrical re-release in 2024 proved that the audience’s hunger for this unique mythological universe has only grown with time.
The commencement of the shoot wasn’t just a quiet affair. The Mahurat ceremony saw a significant gathering of film industry heavyweights, underscoring the high expectations surrounding this sequel. Joining Sohum Shah and Dr. Jayantilal Gada (Chairman of Pen Studios) were veteran producers Boney Kapoor and Tutu Sharma, along with Dhaval Gada.
The presence of such seasoned producers at the launch highlights the commercial and critical weight that Tumbbad 2 carries. This collaboration between Sohum Shah Films and Pen Studios brings together a unique blend of indie creative grit and major studio production power, ensuring that the sequel receives the global scale it deserves.
While the first film was a largely solo tour de force for Sohum Shah, the sequel introduces a fresh dynamic with the addition of Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Siddiqui, known for his ability to disappear into complex, gritty characters, joins the cast in a pivotal role.
Early industry buzz suggests that Siddiqui’s character will serve as a formidable force within the narrative—not necessarily a traditional “villain,” but a character draped in the same “grey” moral ambiguity that made Vinayak Rao so compelling. The prospect of seeing two of India’s most talented character actors share the screen in a folk-horror setting is already being hailed as a “casting masterstroke” by fans and critics alike.
One of the most striking details of the Tumbbad 2 production is the sheer physical scale of the project. To maintain the immersive, period-accurate, and haunting aesthetic of the franchise, the makers have constructed a massive set spanning 7 to 8 acres in Mumbai.
This sprawling installation reportedly resembles an entire city from a bygone era, allowing director Adesh Prasad to capture long, sweeping shots without the limitations of a standard soundstage. Prasad, who was deeply involved in the first film as a co-director and writer, has stepped up to lead the sequel. His intimate knowledge of the Tumbbad lore ensures that while the scale has increased, the atmospheric tension that defined the original remains at the core of the experience.
To bridge the gap between 2018 and 2026, the production has onboarded top-tier international talent. Concept artist Simon Lee and renowned prosthetic designer Shaune Harrison are part of the core crew.
Given the supernatural elements inherent in the Tumbbad universe, the team is focusing heavily on practical effects and intricate prosthetics. The goal is to create a visual continuity that feels like a natural evolution of the first film’s world-building, utilizing the 200-plus day shoot schedule to perfect every frame.
The film benefits from a unique “long-tail” search advantage. Because the original film is considered a masterpiece of the genre, the sequel naturally captures the interest of both cinephiles and general horror fans. The 2024 re-release further solidified its digital presence, making Tumbbad 2 one of the most consistently searched upcoming titles in the Indian market.
With the cameras officially rolling and a powerhouse cast at the helm, Tumbbad 2 is no longer just a rumour—it is a massive cinematic reality. Under the direction of Adesh Prasad and the production prowess of Sohum Shah and Jayantilal Gada, the film is poised to push the boundaries of what Indian genre cinema can achieve. As the team settles into their 8-acre city in Mumbai, the audience waits with bated breath to see what new horrors and wonders lie within the shadows of Tumbbad.
