The Indian independent film circuit is buzzing with the latest casting update for one of 2026’s most anticipated debuts. Sure Real Pictures, a production house known for its bold focus on Gen Z and Millennial narratives, has officially cast rising star Mahika Sharma in a pivotal lead role for their upcoming feature film, Liberation.
Collaborating with Approach Entertainment as co-producers, the makers are positioning Liberation as a gritty, high-stakes thriller designed for a global audience. The film marks the debut feature for Sure Real Pictures, signalling a fresh era of character-driven storytelling that bridges the gap between local grit and international appeal.
In Liberation, Mahika Sharma takes on the role of Dorothy, a resilient and street-smart woman fighting for survival in a merciless urban landscape. Dorothy isn’t just a supporting figure; she serves as the emotional fulcrum of the story. Her raw survival instincts and layered vulnerability intersect with the protagonist’s dark journey, sparking a chain reaction of vengeance and redemption.
Director and writer Ankit Kadam designed Dorothy to be a complex mirror to the film’s darker themes. “Mahika has an incredible ability to convey complex inner worlds with subtlety and power,” Kadam remarked. “Dorothy is a character who fights to survive while holding onto her humanity—Mahika understood and embodied that beautifully from day one.”
The decision to cast Mahika follows her string of impressive performances across various platforms. With a background rooted in theatre and classical dance, Mahika brings an “authenticity” to the screen that is rare in the digital age.
She gained significant recognition in Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2 (Amazon Prime Video). Her filmography includes roles in Farrey (Salman Khan Productions) and the upcoming The Great Escape Farrar alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui. She starred in the horror-comedy Manushya, which premiered at IFFI Goa 2025 and currently streams on Waves OTT.
Liberation benefits from a robust production ecosystem. Kanishk Kadam, founder of Sure Real Pictures, serves as the primary producer, while Sonu Tyagi of Approach Entertainment joins as co-producer.
“We are delighted to welcome Mahika Sharma to the Liberation family,” said Kanishk Kadam. “Her stage-honed intensity and natural screen presence make her the perfect Dorothy. She brings grit and strength to a role central to the film’s emotional core.”
Sonu Tyagi, a veteran in celebrity management and film marketing, emphasized the film’s global potential. “Mahika Sharma is a multi-talented force with a bright future. We’re proud to take this powerful narrative to global audiences through our integrated PR and marketing ecosystem.”
While Liberation is primarily an English-language global thriller, the producers have confirmed a multi-language release strategy, including a Hindi version to cater to the domestic Indian market. This approach ensures that the film’s themes of identity and purpose resonate with youth demographics worldwide.
Currently in active production, the film will move into an extensive post-production phase later this year.
As Liberation gears up for its 2026 release, the casting of Mahika Sharma stands as a bold statement of intent. By choosing a versatile, theatre-trained performer for such a demanding role, the makers are prioritizing substance over mere stardom. For Mahika, Dorothy represents a career-defining milestone; for the audience, it promises a thriller that is as emotionally resonant as it is pulse-pounding.
