Celebrated filmmaker Meghna Gulzar, known for her sharp storytelling and gripping narratives, is back with her next project, ‘Daayra’, a socially-charged crime thriller inspired by the controversial 2019 Hyderabad encounter case. Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran will be seen in the lead roles, marking a powerful and intriguing pairing for the first time on screen.
‘Daayra’, backed by Junglee Pictures, marks the third collaboration between Meghna Gulzar and the production house, following acclaimed films like ‘Raazi’ and ‘Talvar’—both known for shedding light on true events with gripping narratives and social commentary.
Daayra Inspired by the 2019 Hyderabad Case That Shocked the Nation
‘Daayra’ draws inspiration from the brutal 2019 case of a 26-year-old veterinary doctor, who was gang-raped and murdered, with her body set on fire. The horror of the crime sent shockwaves across India and led to widespread public outrage.
Soon after, the four accused were arrested, and days later, they were killed in a police encounter under controversial circumstances. While some hailed it as swift justice, questions were raised about the legality and morality of the police action. In 2022, the Supreme Court declared the encounter a staged killing, labelling it as extrajudicial and reigniting nationwide debates on justice, law enforcement, and systemic flaws.
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran Headlining the Film
Meghna Gulzar has cast Kareena Kapoor Khan, one of Bollywood’s most iconic actresses, in a role that sources suggest is emotionally intense and socially relevant. Kareena, who has recently taken on more mature and impactful roles, is set to portray a character deeply entangled in the pursuit of justice.
Joining her is Prithviraj Sukumaran, the Malayalam superstar who continues to expand his footprint in pan-India cinema. He replaces Ayushmann Khurrana, who was initially rumoured to be attached to the project. Prithviraj’s selection is seen as a refreshing and bold move, bringing gravitas and depth to the male lead, reportedly a high-ranking law enforcement officer.
Junglee Pictures and Meghna Gulzar Reunite
After the success of ‘Talvar’ (2015), based on the Noida double murder case, and ‘Raazi’ (2018), a cross-border espionage drama, Meghna and Junglee Pictures are once again set to explore a real-life case that demands urgent reflection and cinematic justice.
In a statement shared on social media, the makers said, “We are proud to bring a film like ‘Daayra’ to life, one that addresses crucial questions about justice and accountability while delivering a gripping cinematic experience.”
Production to Begin Soon
According to insiders, pre-production is already underway, with filming expected to begin by mid-2025. The team is currently finalising locations and assembling a technically strong crew to ensure authenticity and cinematic excellence.
While the official release date has not yet been announced, ‘Daayra’ is expected to hit theatres in 2026.
Final Word about Daayra
With a gripping true-crime inspiration, a powerhouse cast, and Meghna Gulzar’s masterful direction, ‘Daayra’ promises to be a thought-provoking cinematic journey that not only reflects a harsh reality but also pushes viewers to re-evaluate what justice truly means in today’s world.
