Kaithi Makers Move Bombay High Court Against Ajay Devgn’s ‘Bholaa’ Producers in Major Remake Rights Dispute

A significant legal storm is brewing within the corridors of the Indian film industry. Dream Warrior Pictures, the Tamil production house behind the 2019 blockbuster Kaithi, has approached the Bombay High Court to initiate legal proceedings against the producers of the Hindi remake, Bholaa.

The lawsuit targets Ajay Devgn Films LLP and Reliance Entertainment Studios, alleging significant copyright infringement and a breach of contractual agreements related to the remake rights of the original Karthi-starrer. As of late March 2026, the legal battle has entered a critical phase, with industry insiders watching closely for a verdict that could set a new precedent for pan-India remake collaborations.

The dispute centers on the intellectual property (IP) of the 2019 Tamil hit Kaithi. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Karthi, the film became a cult classic, spawning its own cinematic universe. According to the petition filed by Dream Warrior Pictures, the company retains absolute ownership over the film’s IP, including the exclusive right to authorize remakes in other languages.

In their filing, Dream Warrior Pictures asserts that they produced and released Kaithi in October 2019. They maintain that while they were open to a Hindi adaptation, any such project required strict adherence to contractual financial obligations. The company alleges that the producers of Bholaa—which stars Ajay Devgn and Tabu—have failed to honour these terms, leading to a direct infringement of their copyright.

The legal friction stems from a series of agreements that began in early 2020. Dream Warrior Pictures initially entered into a collaboration with a Reliance Group entity to facilitate the Hindi transition. However, the situation grew complex as the remake moved into active production.

The Key Legal Milestones:

  • March 29, 2023: Dream Warrior signed a pivotal agreement with Reliance Entertainment Studios. This deal officially granted the rights for the Hindi remake, titled Bholaa.
  • The Payment Structure: The contract stipulated that Dream Warrior would receive a fixed fee in multiple installments. Additionally, the Tamil production house was to receive earnings tied directly to the film’s box office performance.
  • The Initial Payout: Dream Warrior admits they received an initial payment of ₹1 Crore plus GST in April 2022. However, they claim this remains the only payment ever made toward the total fee.

Shortly after the global release of Bholaa on March 30, 2023, a second agreement was executed on April 1, 2023. This three-way deal involved Dream Warrior, Reliance, and Ajay Devgn Films LLP. Despite this renewed contract, the plaintiff alleges that payments scheduled for April and May 2023 were never cleared, leaving a massive financial gap.

The matter recently reached a single-judge bench led by Justice Sharmila Deshmukh. During the hearing, legal representatives for Dream Warrior Pictures argued that the defendants continued to exploit the Kaithi IP through the theatrical release and subsequent digital streaming of Bholaa without fulfilling their financial “Conditions Precedent.”

Counsel for the defendants reportedly argued on preliminary issues, questioning the jurisdiction or specific clauses within the multi-party agreements. After hearing extensive arguments from both sides, Justice Deshmukh has currently reserved her decision on a preliminary issue. This “reserve” status means the industry must wait for the court’s written order to determine the next steps in this high-stakes litigation.

The outcome of this case will likely dictate how future “fixed fee plus performance” deals are structured between South Indian production houses and Mumbai-based studios. If the court finds in favour of Dream Warrior Pictures, it could lead to stricter escrow requirements for remake rights in the future.

As the Bombay High Court prepares to deliver its preliminary ruling, the tension between the Kaithi and Bholaa camps remains high. Dream Warrior Pictures continues to demand their outstanding dues, while the producers of Bholaa face the potential for significant legal penalties if found in breach of contract.

In an era where original content is king and IP is the most valuable currency, this case highlights the necessity of transparent financial conduct in cinematic partnerships.
