Addressing the Buzz: Is Alia Bhatt Joining the 'Kalki' Sequel?

The cinematic world is currently abuzz with reports surrounding the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD. Following recent online speculation, social media has been flooded with claims that Bollywood star Alia Bhatt has officially joined the ambitious franchise. However, a spokesperson for the film’s production team has stepped forward to address these rumours, providing much-needed clarity.

For the past 24 hours, various reports have suggested that Alia Bhatt has been roped in for a “pivotal” and “prominent” role in the sequel, currently referred to as Kalki 2. Some outlets even claimed that the actress had already completed a five-day shooting schedule in Hyderabad.

The speculation gained further traction due to the ongoing narrative shift within the franchise. Ever since Vyjayanthi Movies officially announced in September 2025 that Deepika Padukone would not be returning for the sequel, fans have been eagerly awaiting news regarding the casting of the female lead, particularly the role of Sumathi (SUM-80).

In response to the growing chatter, a spokesperson for the Kalki production team addressed the media, explicitly quashing the reports regarding Alia Bhatt’s involvement.

“There is no official clarity yet,” the spokesperson told Hindustan Times, adding a firm correction to the rumours of filming: “No shooting [has taken place].”

The spokesperson noted that the viral claims appeared to originate from social media speculation that was subsequently shared and amplified across various platforms without verification. As of now, the production house has confirmed that there is no official agreement or finalized casting decision regarding Alia Bhatt joining the project.

The departure of Deepika Padukone from the franchise remains a significant point of interest for the sequel. In their September 2025 statement, the makers cited a lack of “partnership” as the reason for the professional separation, emphasizing that the scale of the Kalki franchise requires a level of commitment that the production team and the actor could not align on.

Since that announcement, rumours have frequently swirled around potential replacements. Earlier this year, reports linked actress Sai Pallavi to the role of Sumathi. However, even in that instance, production sources clarified that while the makers have discussed various options, nothing had been finalized. The team maintains a policy of extreme secrecy, often choosing to keep casting developments under wraps until the official announcement.

Despite the lack of official news on the female lead, the production of Kalki 2 is moving forward steadily. Director Nag Ashwin and his core team are currently deep into the filming process, with major veterans like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan already having resumed their work on the sequel. Prabhas is also set to headline the follow-up, which promises to expand the mythological and futuristic dystopian world established in the first part.

With a projected release window toward the end of 2027, the film remains one of the most significant projects in Indian cinema. For now, audiences are advised to await official updates from Vyjayanthi Movies rather than relying on unverified internet chatter. As the Kalki universe expands, one thing is clear: the makers are taking their time to ensure that every casting choice aligns with the epic scope of the narrative.

As the production continues in Hyderabad, fans of the franchise can expect official announcements regarding the remaining cast members in the coming months.
