In a significant development addressing the growing threat of AI-driven harassment, the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police have arrested three individuals accused of creating and disseminating deepfake visuals targeting Kannada actress Rukmini Vasanth. The arrests mark a decisive step in the ongoing investigation into the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence to manipulate the actress’s likeness.
The accused—identified as Ravikumar (24) from Bagalkot, Chandrakanth (33) from Shivamogga, and Ranjith (25) from Bengaluru—were apprehended following an extensive probe into the origin and distribution of the doctored content.
The investigation was set in motion after the 29-year-old actress filed a formal cybercrime complaint. Rukmini Vasanth, widely recognized for her stellar performances in films like Sapta Sagaradaache Ello and Kantara: Chapter 1, found herself the target of malicious AI-generated content earlier this year.
Fabricated images and videos, which falsely depicted the actor in a bikini, began circulating on social media platforms in May 2026. These visuals, created using advanced AI tools to superimpose the actress’s face onto other bodies, were shared with claims that they originated from a film shoot. The actress swiftly condemned the material, publicly labelling it a “serious violation of privacy” and a case of “character assassination.”
In her statement to the media and on social platforms, she emphasized that the issue extended beyond her own experience, noting, “It starts with actresses, but this happens to a lot of girls and women across the country.”
Following the actress’s complaint, the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police registered an FIR against 29 social media accounts, including various Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook pages. The subsequent investigation utilized digital forensics to track the network responsible for the creation and amplification of the manipulated visuals.
During the operation leading to the arrests, police seized three mobile phones used to generate and circulate the offensive content. Officials have stated that these devices are currently undergoing forensic examination to identify further evidence and determine if a broader network of individuals was involved.
The suspects have been produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded to custody. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), covering serious offenses such as identity theft, defamation, and acts intended to outrage modesty.
The Rukmini Vasanth case has reignited a critical national conversation regarding the ethical use of artificial intelligence and the protection of personality rights. As AI tools become increasingly accessible, law enforcement agencies are grappling with the rapid spread of fabricated content that can damage reputations and cause profound emotional distress.

The case mirrors similar incidents involving other public figures, prompting calls for stricter regulations and more robust legal frameworks to hold perpetrators of digital impersonation accountable.
Despite the distress caused by the incident, Rukmini Vasanth remains focused on her flourishing career. The actress, who continues to receive widespread support from both the film fraternity and her fans, is currently preparing for several high-profile releases.
