The legendary comedy duo is back! Superstar Akshay Kumar and director Anees Bazmee are set to collaborate once again, this time for the official Hindi remake of the recent Telugu hit, Sankranthiki Vasthunam. The project, confirmed by producer Sirish of Sri Venkateswara Creations at the 56th IFFI in Goa, marks a major partnership that promises to deliver a madcap comic entertainer based on a highly relatable—if complicated—love triangle.
The original 2025 film, directed by Anil Ravipudi and produced by Dil Raju and Sirish, starred Venkatesh as an ex-cop caught between his wife and his former police officer girlfriend. Anees Bazmee and Akshay Kumar reportedly loved the core plot—a married man struggling to juggle a high-stakes mission while managing a chaotic domestic situation involving his protective wife and authoritative ex-girlfriend. The film will reportedly go on floors in February 2026.
The Telugu version of Sankranthiki Vasthunam was celebrated for its slapstick humour and the brilliant chemistry between Venkatesh, Aishwarya Rajesh (the wife), and Meenakshi Chaudhary (the ex-girlfriend). The film’s central conflict revolves around the protagonist, YD Raju, who must join a high-profile kidnapping rescue mission at the behest of his former lover, ACP Meenakshi, only for his fiercely protective wife, Bhagyalakshmi, to insist on joining the operation.
Anees Bazmee and Akshay Kumar immediately recognized the comic potential inherent in this setup. A source close to the production stated, “Anees and Akshay loved the plot of the lead character stuck between his wife and ex-girlfriend that Sankranthiki Vasthunam rides on.”
However, the original film contained strong regional flavours and cultural jokes specific to the Telugu audience. To make the film palatable for the broader Hindi audience, Bazmee is reimagining the screenplay. Reports suggest that the adaptation will retain only about 40% of the original content, with the master of comedy writing in 60% of fresh sequences and gags to ensure the Hindi version feels organic, funnier, and perfectly aligns with the comedic sensibilities that made their past collaborations massive hits.
This film marks the much-anticipated reunion of the director-actor pair after more than a decade, having previously delivered blockbusters like Welcome (2007) and Singh Is Kinng (2008). Their track record guarantees an out-and-out family entertainer built on situational comedy and high energy.
Akshay Kumar is expected to step into the role played by Venkatesh, showcasing his trademark comic timing as a man desperately trying to keep the peace between the two dominant women in his life while simultaneously executing a serious action mission. The role is tailor-made for Akshay’s versatility, allowing him to blend action, situational humour, and emotional frustration seamlessly.
The film is being produced by Dil Raju and Sirish under their banner, Sri Venkateswara Creations, marking the South Indian production house’s renewed focus on mounting high-profile Bollywood projects. Dil Raju’s involvement adds considerable weight, guaranteeing the film will be mounted on a grand scale.
The writing process for the Hindi version is reportedly progressing swiftly, with the team aiming to take the untitled film on floors in February 2026. This tight schedule highlights the makers’ confidence in the script’s adaptation and their desire to capitalize on the success of the original Telugu film.
The Telugu version’s success was largely attributed to its unique blend of domestic comedy and high-stakes crime drama, a formula that has historically worked well for the Hindi film industry when handled by a veteran like Anees Bazmee.
Fans of the Welcome and Singh Is Kinng brand of comedy are already voicing immense excitement for this new collaboration, eagerly anticipating the official casting announcements for the two leading female roles, which are crucial to the film’s chaotic and hilarious dynamic. Sankranthiki Vasthunam, or its newly titled Hindi version, is strategically positioned to become one of 2026’s biggest comedy hits.
