Directed by the acclaimed Rajkumar Hirani, “Dunki” marks the much-anticipated return of Shah Rukh Khan to the silver screen. After the blockbuster Pathaan and Jawaan, Shahrukh Khan comes up with another worthwhile watching yet Rajkumar Hirani’s one of the sloppiest storytelling. The film embarks on a journey with Hirani’s signature blend of humor, emotion, and social commentary, following the story of Punjabi expatriate.
Hardayal Singh Dhillon aka Hardy (Shahrukh Khan) who is willing to help to Manu (Tapsee Pannu) to go to the UK to win back her house which was lost by his father due to non-payment. Manu is the sister of Mahender who saves Hardy’s life but later passed away in an accident. Manu, Bali Kakkad (Anil Grover), Buggu Lakhanpal (Vikram Kochhar) meets Geetu Gulati (Boman Irani) who runs and English Coaching Institute to clear IELTS where they meet Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal) and become friends. Story unfolds from here how they all reached UK by hook or crook.
Hirani’s signature style is evident throughout the film. Heart-warming humor and emotional moments are woven into the narrative, offering a feel-good experience for audiences familiar with his previous works. However, the film also treads familiar territory, relying on tropes and predictable plot points that may feel formulaic to some viewers.
While the narrative may lack novelty, Shah Rukh Khan delivers a captivating performance as Dunki. He effortlessly embodies the character’s charm, vulnerability, and unwavering determination, reminding audiences of his ability to connect with the emotional core of a story. The supporting cast, including Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu, and Boman Irani, add depth and humor to the narrative, further enriching the cinematic experience.
While primarily focused on entertainment, “Dunki” subtly touches upon relevant social issues. The film explores themes of illegal immigration, the struggles of expatriates, and the yearning for home, offering a glimpse into the human cost of displacement. However, the social commentary remains relatively understated, leaving room for a more nuanced exploration of these complex themes.
The film boasts impressive technical aspects. while the music, composed by Pritam, seamlessly complements the emotional arc of the narrative. The action sequences, though limited, are well-choreographed and add an element of thrill to the story.
Pritam’s soundtrack for “Dunki” is a delightful blend of catchy tunes and soulful melodies. Tracks like “Dil Bechara” and “Jahaan Tu Le Chala” are sure to become chart-toppers, while the melancholic “Safar” perfectly captures the emotional undercurrent of the film. The music effectively elevates the viewing experience, adding depth and resonance to the narrative. (4 out of 5 stars)
“Dunki” is a heartwarming and entertaining film that delivers on its promise of nostalgia and emotional connection. While the narrative may lack originality and the social commentary remains somewhat understated, the film is elevated by Shah Rukh Khan’s captivating performance and Pritam’s soulful music.
