The highly anticipated biographical war drama Ikkis, starring Agastya Nanda has officially shifted its theatrical arrival. Originally slated for a Christmas Day release on December 25, 2025, the film will now hit the big screen a week later on January 1, 2026. Producers Dinesh Vijan and Maddock Films announced the decision via social media, positioning the movie as the first major Bollywood release of the upcoming new year.
The film, which marks the theatrical debut of Agastya Nanda (grandson of Amitabh Bachchan), chronicles the awe-inspiring life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, the youngest recipient of India’s highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra.
Industry insiders confirm that the decision to postpone the film stems from a crowded festive window. Currently, Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar is creating a “tsunami” at the box office, shattering records and showing no signs of slowing down. Additionally, the Hollywood juggernaut Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled for an extensive India release on December 19, just days before the original Ikkis slot.
By moving to January 1, 2026, Maddock Films ensures that Ikkis receives a clearer theatrical run with better screen allocation and prime show timings. Trade analysts have lauded the move, noting that producer Dinesh Vijan has successfully used this “solo release” strategy in the past for hits like Hindi Medium and Chhaava.
Ikkis (meaning “Twenty-One”) takes its title from the age at which Arun Khetarpal made the supreme sacrifice during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The film focuses on the Battle of Basantar, where Khetarpal, a young tank commander, showed unparalleled bravery.
Even after his tank caught fire during the heat of the battle, Khetarpal famously refused to abandon his post, stating: “No, Sir, I will not abandon my tank. My main gun is still working and I will get these bastards.” He eventually destroyed ten enemy tanks before falling in action. Directed by National Award winner Sriram Raghavan, the film aims to capture the innocence of a 21-year-old boy alongside the grit of a dedicated soldier.
The film boasts a stellar cast that brings emotional weight to the historical narrative:
- Agastya Nanda: Following his streaming debut in The Archies, Nanda takes on the challenging role of the young war hero.
- Dharmendra: In what is confirmed to be his final on-screen appearance, the legendary actor plays Arun’s father, Brigadier Madan Lal Khetarpal. A highlight of the film will be Dharmendra reciting his poignant poem, “Aj Bhi Ji Karda Hai, Pind Apne Nu Jaanwa.”
- Jaideep Ahlawat: Known for his powerhouse performances, Ahlawat plays a crucial role as a mentor and senior military figure.
- Simar Bhatia: Making her highly anticipated acting debut, the niece of Akshay Kumar plays Arun’s love interest, adding a softer, romantic dimension to the war-torn story.
Known for his mastery of noir thrillers like Andhadhun and Johnny Gaddaar, Sriram Raghavan ventures into the war genre for the first time with Ikkis. Fans are eager to see how his meticulous attention to detail and character-driven storytelling translate to the battlefield.
The makers have also confirmed that the final trailer for Ikkis will drop this weekend, giving audiences a deeper look at the chemistry between Agastya Nanda and Dharmendra.
