The Indian film and television industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Achyut Potdar, who passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the age of 91. A beloved and versatile artist, Potdar breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he had been admitted for age-related health issues. His demise marks the end of a long and illustrious career that spanned over four decades, during which he became a familiar face to generations of audiences across both Hindi and Marathi cinema.
While Achyut Potdar had a prolific career with over 125 film appearances, he is most fondly remembered by the current generation for his memorable and short yet impactful role as the strict college professor in Rajkumar Hirani‘s blockbuster film, “3 Idiots” starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. His iconic dialogue, “Arey kehna kya chahte ho?” (What do you want to say?), became an instant sensation and transcended the film itself. The line, delivered with a mix of exasperation and authority, went viral and has been immortalized in countless memes and social media clips, making him a pop-culture icon for a new generation.
Tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the industry, with many actors and directors recalling his powerful screen presence and his ability to make even the smallest of roles memorable. Director Hansal Mehta expressed his admiration for the actor, recalling his work with him in his directorial debut and describing him as an artist with “amazing timing and a super caustic sense of humour.”
Achyut Potdar’s journey to becoming an actor was as remarkable as his performances. Born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, he was not a formally trained actor. Before he entered the world of cinema, Potdar had a decorated career in two completely different fields. After completing his post-graduation in economics, he first worked as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. He then went on to serve in the Indian Army and retired with the rank of captain in 1967.
His life after the army was equally distinguished. He worked as an executive at the Indian Oil Corporation for 25 years before retiring in 1992 at the age of 58. It was during his time at Indian Oil that his passion for acting truly blossomed, as he actively participated in theatrical projects and plays. This unique background gave him a distinct versatility, enabling him to portray a wide range of characters with a sense of authenticity and conviction.
Potdar made his acting debut in the 1980 Hindi film Aakrosh and never looked back. Over the next four decades, he became a fixture in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, working with some of the biggest names in the industry. His extensive filmography includes acclaimed titles like Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. He was known for his effortless and natural acting style, which allowed him to portray a wide range of supporting characters, from a stern father to an upright government official.
Beyond the big screen, he also made his mark on Indian television with memorable roles in popular shows like Wagle Ki Duniya, Bharat Ki Khoj, and Majha Hoshil Na. His dedication to his craft was evident in his work, and he continued to work well into his late 80s, showcasing a level of passion and resilience that few could match.
Passing of Achyut Potdar is a profound loss for the entertainment industry. His journey from an army captain to a cinematic icon serves as a testament to his passion, and his iconic roles will continue to live on in the hearts of his fans.
