Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut starrer much-anticipated film Emergency has recently hit a significant hurdle as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has demanded certain cuts before issuing a certification for its release. Abhinav Chandrachud, CBFC counsel informed the Bombay Court on 26th September that the revising committee had completed its review of the film. The committee stipulated that some cuts and insertions must be made before certification could be granted.
This development has left the fate of the film in a state of uncertainty, as it now hinges on whether Kangana Ranaut and her team will comply with the CBFC’s suggestions or choose to challenge them. The matter has now been adjourned to September 30, 2024, leaving the release of the film in suspense.
CBFC’s Role in Certification
The CBFC is responsible for certifying films before they can be publicly exhibited in India. The board assesses films based on a set of guidelines, which include ensuring that the content does not offend the sentiments of any community or group and that it aligns with India’s moral and cultural values. For Emergency, the revising committee of the CBFC has suggested 11 specific changes. These include both cuts and insertions to certain scenes and dialogues.

Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency is one of the most anticipated films of the year, mainly due to its controversial subject matter. The film is based on the Emergency period in India, which lasted from 1975 to 1977, a time when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency across the country.

During the court hearing, Zee Studios’ advocate, Sharan Jagtiani, revealed that the CBFC had communicated the need for 11 changes, which include both cuts and additional insertions to the film. Jagtiani further stated that it was now up to Kangana Ranaut and her team to either accept these changes or challenge the board’s decision.
The Legal Proceedings and What’s Next
With the matter adjourned to September 30, 2024, the Bombay High Court has granted time for the filmmakers to decide on the cuts. This will allow Kangana Ranaut and Zee Entertainment to deliberate on the CBFC’s recommendations and strategize their next steps. If they accept the cuts, the certification process can proceed smoothly, allowing the film to be released as planned. However, if they choose to challenge the board’s decision, the film could face additional legal hurdles and further delays.
