Ram Gopal Varma Announces Police Company: Harshvardhan Rane Set to Play Daya Nayak

Maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is returning to the gritty underworld and law-enforcement space that defined his most celebrated cinematic works. Taking to social media platform X, the director officially announced his next massive directorial venture, titled Police Company. Backed by T-Series, the film promises an unfiltered look at the intersection of state authority and crime, carrying a punchy and provocative tagline: “It Is More Dangerous Than D Company.”

The project is inspired by the notorious special encounter squad formed by the Mumbai Police in the late 1990s and early 2000s to dismantle rising gang syndicates in the metropolis. Actor Harshvardhan Rane has been roped in to essay the lead role of real-life legendary police officer Daya Nayak.

Ram Gopal Varma explained the core philosophy behind the title and narrative framework through his announcement on X. Highlighting how power shifts institutional dynamics, Varma wrote:

“The police is an institution, and an underworld company is a money-making organisation.. But when an institution is given extra powers, it will soon become a company.”

Detailing the protagonist and the plot’s real-life roots, Varma added:

“POLICE COMPANY is the story inspired by that SQUAD based on one of its team members DAYA NAYAK which is being played by HARSH VARDHAN RANE. The film has a huge ensemble cast, the details of which will be revealed soon.”

Given Varma’s historic mastery over the gangster-cop genre (Satya, Company, Ab Tak Chhappan), Police Company is already anticipated as a hard-hitting addition to Indian crime thrillers.

Bagging the lead role in an RGV directorial marks a major career milestone for Harshvardhan Rane, who continues to expand his range across diverse film genres. Rane’s busy slate of upcoming projects features several high-profile titles:

  • Silaa: He recently wrapped up production on Omung Kumar’s action-romance drama alongside Sadia Khateeb.

Off-screen, Harshvardhan Rane maintains a fiercely independent and outdoorsy lifestyle, often sharing glimpses of his passion for motorcycling, nature, and minimalist living.

Over recent years, the actor’s personal life has also frequently attracted media attention and internet speculation. Rane has been linked in entertainment headlines regarding his equations within the industry, notably keeping his romantic and personal boundaries closely guarded while continuing to let his professional body of work capture the spotlight.

With Police Company locking down its lead and T-Series bankrolling the venture, the film is expected to hit floors soon, promising an explosive cinematic exploration of Mumbai’s most intense era of policing.
