From 'Lahore 1947' to 'Batwara': Aamir Khan’s Personal Intervention Secures New Title for Sunny Deol’s Partition Saga

In a major development for one of the most awaited films of the year, the production team behind the upcoming partition drama featuring Sunny Deol has officially rebranded the project. Formerly known as Lahore 1947, the film will now be released under the powerful and evocative title, Batwara.

This change follows a series of creative discussions and a dedicated effort by producer Aamir Khan to honour the legacy of the title while securing the legal rights necessary for its use.

According to sources close to the production, the film’s core team was unanimous in their desire to move away from the original working title, Lahore 1947. While the initial shift led them to lock in Batwara 1947, the team eventually concluded that the singular, punchy title Batwara—meaning “division” or “partition”—carried the necessary emotional weight and thematic relevance for the story.

However, the path to securing Batwara was not merely a creative choice; it required navigating existing intellectual property rights. The team discovered that the rights to the title belonged to the family of the late veteran producer Salim Akhtar, who had produced the iconic film Batwara in 1989. To retain the title in its purest form without the year suffix, the producers needed to acquire these rights.

In a gesture that underscores his deep commitment to the project, Aamir Khan took the lead in resolving the title dispute personally. Veteran filmmaker Karim Morani acted as the bridge, arranging a meeting between Aamir Khan and Samad Akhtar, the son of the late Salim Akhtar.

Aamir opted for a direct and respectful approach, visiting Samad’s home to discuss the matter face-to-face. Beyond just a business transaction, the meeting turned into a warm exchange of cinematic history. Aamir shared cherished memories of working with Salim Akhtar on the 1995 film Baazi, demonstrating his professional connection to the late producer’s legacy. He further articulated why the title Batwara was so essential for the upcoming partition saga.

The Akhtar family, moved by Aamir’s approach and his respect for their patriarch’s legacy, agreed to the transfer. Samad Akhtar’s mother, Shama, was also present during the visit, cementing a collaborative agreement that allowed the project to move forward under its new identity.

The change to Batwara sets the stage for a grand release on August 13, 2026. The film is set to be one of the most significant period dramas of recent years, reuniting the formidable creative partnership of actor Sunny Deol and director Rajkumar Santoshi.

Beyond the reunion of the lead star and director, the project is a massive cinematic undertaking:

  • Star-Studded Cast: The film features an ensemble including Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol.
  • Supporting Presence: Aamir Khan himself will appear in a supporting role, adding another layer of intrigue to the ensemble.
  • Historical Weight: The film promises to deliver a poignant look at the partition era, drawing on the same themes of family and societal conflict that made the original 1989 Batwara a cult classic.

As the industry and audiences alike look toward the Independence Day weekend release, the rebranding to Batwara feels like a return to the roots of the genre, promising a film that is as respectful of its history as it is bold in its execution.

With the legal formalities settled and the title locked, the team is now full-steam ahead for their August 13 premiere.
