The 2026 summer box office calendar has shifted yet again, the makers of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai (HJTIHH) have officially moved the film back to its original release date: June 5, 2026.
Starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde, the film originally aimed for this June window before a series of industry-wide shifts forced a temporary change in plans. With the latest update, producer Ramesh Taurani and director David Dhawan have successfully reclaimed the prime summer slot for their highly anticipated romantic entertainer.
The journey to the June 5 release has been a tactical rollercoaster for the team at Tips Films. Initially, the production house had circled June 5 as the ideal debut for HJTIHH. However, when the makers of the Yash-starrer Toxic announced a massive global release for June 4, the industry braced for a gargantuan clash.
In an amicable and calculated decision to avoid a split in theater screens and audience attention, the makers of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai opted to prepone their release to May 22, 2026. The goal was to give the Varun Dhawan film a “solo” window to breathe before the Toxic storm arrived.
However, the landscape changed overnight when KVN Productions announced that Toxic would be postponed indefinitely to finalize complex global distribution deals. With the threat of a clash removed, the HJTIHH team has chosen to “root back” to their preferred original date of June 5, ensuring the film has the full advantage of the early June holidays.
The primary driver of the hype surrounding Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is the director-actor reunion between David Dhawan and his son, Varun Dhawan. This duo has previously delivered massive hits like Main Tera Hero and the Judwaa 2 reboot.
David Dhawan, the undisputed “King of Comedy,” reportedly brings his signature vibrant aesthetic and situational humour back to the big screen with this project. Insiders describe the film as a high-energy romantic comedy that balances modern sensibilities with the classic “Dhawan style” of storytelling that dominated the 90s and early 2000s.
The film’s appeal is significantly bolstered by its leading ladies. Mrunal Thakur, who has established herself as a versatile powerhouse in both Hindi and Telugu cinema, brings a layer of sophisticated charm to the narrative. Opposite her, Pooja Hegde, one of the most sought-after stars in the Pan-India circuit, adds a high-glamour quotient and immense star power.
Produced by Ramesh Taurani under the Tips Films banner, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is being mounted as a premium theatrical experience. Taurani, known for his impeccable ear for music and sharp distribution sense, is reportedly planning an aggressive 30-day marketing blitz starting in May.
With the film now returning to June 5, the production house has more breathing room to execute their promotional strategy. The extra two weeks gained from shifting away from May 22 will be utilized to perfect the film’s post-production and launch a high-decibel music campaign—a hallmark of any Tips Films production.
The postponement of Toxic has inadvertently provided Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai with the perfect theatrical window. By returning to June 5, Varun Dhawan and the team have secured a date that allows them to tap into the peak summer audience without the pressure of a major clash.
As the industry moves closer to the mid-year mark of 2026, all eyes are on David Dhawan to see if he can once again deliver a film that brings the “masala” entertainer back to the top of the charts.
