Sunny Deol starrer ‘Gabru’ Postponed: Won’t Release on May 8

The thunderous roar of Sunny Deol at the box office will have to wait just a little longer. Despite the massive anticipation surrounding his next big project, the makers of Gabru have officially postponed the film’s release. Originally slated to arrive in cinemas on May 8, 2026, the emotional drama has moved out of its summer slot, leaving fans eager for a revised schedule.

This delay comes at a time when Sunny Deol is enjoying a career-high resurgence. The veteran action star kicked off 2026 on a sensational note with the blockbuster success of Border 2, which shattered records by grossing over Rs. 300 crore. Naturally, the “Border” fever shifted massive expectations onto Gabru, making its postponement a significant talking point in the trade circuits.

While the May 8 date had been circled on many calendars, the production team has decided to take a step back to ensure the film receives the grand release it deserves. The makers currently plan to lock a new release date within the next few days. Once the logistics are finalized, they will issue an official announcement to the public.

Industry insiders suggest that the team is looking for a window that allows Gabru to breathe without heavy competition, ensuring that the momentum Sunny Deol gained from Border 2 carries over effectively. By avoiding a rushed release, producer Vishal Rana and the team aim to maximize the film’s theatrical potential.

This isn’t the first time Gabru has faced a scheduling change. Initially, the film aimed for a March 13 debut. However, the makers opted to push that date back to May. Several factors influenced that earlier move, including the observance of the holy month of Ramzan, which often sees a dip in theatrical footfalls in specific regions.

Furthermore, the March window saw the release of the massive action spectacle Dhurandhar: The Revenge. To avoid a high-stakes clash that could split the audience, the team strategically moved Gabru to May. The current postponement, however, seems more focused on perfecting the final product and securing an optimal distribution network following the massive “Sunny Deol Wave” currently sweeping the country.

Gabru reportedly leans into a more nuanced, emotional narrative while maintaining the “macho” charisma that Sunny Deol is famous for. Directed by Shashank Udapurkar, the film promises to showcase a different side of the veteran actor—one that balances his legendary intensity with deep-seated familial and social themes.

As the production house prepares for the official announcement, trade analysts are betting on a mid-summer or monsoon release. The priority for the makers is to ensure that Gabru doesn’t get lost in the shuffle of other big-budget releases scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Stay tuned for the official announcement of the new release date, which we expect to drop by the end of this week.
