History is repeating itself in the most spectacular fashion. Cinema legends Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan have officially reunited on the sets of Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Nag Ashwin’s 2024 global blockbuster. The news broke late Monday after Big B took to his official blog to share behind-the-scenes glimpses of the duo in Hyderabad, signalling a monumental moment for Indian cinema.
The reunion marks the first time these two icons will share significant screen space in nearly four decades. Their last major collaboration dates back to the 1985 action-drama Geraftaar, which also featured Rajinikanth. While both appeared in the first installment of Kalki, they did not share a frame—a creative choice that left fans hungry for the confrontation that the sequel now promises to deliver.
Amitabh Bachchan, known for his consistent and heartfelt communication with fans via his Tumblr blog, revealed that he skipped his customary Sunday meet-and-greet at Jalsa to prioritize the filming schedule in Hyderabad.
“Told them that this Sunday I shall not be able to come, since I was shooting in Hyderabad… but still they come… apologies… work first… rest later,” Bachchan wrote.
Sharing a heartwarming photo of himself in his Ashwatthama attire embracing Kamal Haasan, he added: “Meeting up with the great KAMAL HAASAN… we shall be working together after ages… last in Giraftar… Kalki 2 begun the work.” The images capture a rare moment of camaraderie between two stalwarts who have defined their respective industries for over half a century. In the sequel, Amitabh Bachchan reprises his role as the immortal warrior Ashwatthama, while Kamal Haasan returns as the formidable antagonist, Supreme Yaskin.

Directed by visionary filmmaker Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2 is set to dive deeper into the dystopian future of Kashi and the complex lore of the “Complex.” While the first film served as an introduction to the world-building and characters, the sequel aims to be significantly larger in scale.
Nag Ashwin has previously hinted that the second installment will focus heavily on the dynamics between Prabhas’s character (Bhairava/Karna) and Ashwatthama. However, the true centerpiece of the sequel is expected to be the rise of Supreme Yaskin. After the cliffhanger ending of the first film, where Yaskin achieved a fraction of the power he sought, the upcoming movie will showcase his “full strength,” setting the stage for an epic showdown with the protectors of the unborn Kalki.
While the return of the male leads is confirmed, the project has faced significant casting headlines. Deepika Padukone, who played the pivotal role of Sumati (SUM-80) in the first film, has reportedly opted out of the sequel. Industry reports suggest that the departure followed a series of failed negotiations regarding working hours and remuneration.
In her stead, intense rumours suggest that Sai Pallavi is the frontrunner to step into the role of the prophesied mother of Kalki. Known for her powerhouse performances and massive pan-India appeal, Sai Pallavi’s potential inclusion has sparked a wave of excitement among fans. While the production house, Vyjayanthi Movies, has yet to issue a formal confirmation, sources close to the project indicate that discussions are in advanced stages.
Produced by C. Aswani Dutt, the Kalki franchise remains one of the most expensive and ambitious undertakings in Indian film history. The first film earned over $120 million (₹1,000 crore) globally, proving that the blend of Hindu mythology and sci-fi resonates with a modern audience.
As filming progresses in Hyderabad, the production is expected to span several months due to the intricate VFX requirements and massive action set-pieces. Fans can expect a more visceral look at the “Kalki Cinematic Universe,” with a focus on the ancient conflict of the Mahabharata manifesting in the year 2898 AD.
With two of the greatest actors in history now finally sharing the frame, Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2 isn’t just a movie; it’s a historical event.
